American Railroads in the West of the USA

I have visited the Western states of California and Nevada a couple of times and include Arizona in this collection of a few pictures.

I have stayed in Palm Springs on three occasions and have been fascinated by this desert region. Flying into LAX then driving out on Interstate 10 towards San Bernadino, then Palm Springs, you pass the ex Southern Pacific yards at Colton which run for miles. After climbing to Beaumont you descend through a broad canyon into the desert at Palm Springs and the other nearby towns and cities. The steep gradients of the railroad which is adjacent for much of the way, mean that "thousands of horses" are needed to shift freight (and the thrice weekly AMTRAK passenger) trains up and down these grades.

The line through the desert is lined with trees on both sides so photography there is not really an option. There is plenty of scope on the climb from Palm Springs to Beaumont through Cabazon though.

For non-railway travellers there is excellent golf and a fine assortment of restaurants and shops to cater for all tastes. You can easily drop the partner / spouse at the Cabazon outlet mall to browse the designer labels while you observe the procession of UP trains powered by a galaxy of liveried locos. I photographed a train hauled by 7 locos in 5 liveries !!

The Bescot Open Day era

A group of railway-minded people from Bescot set up the Bescot Open Day Committee to arrange an Open Day for 1988, followed by others in 1990 and 1992.

I volunteered for the Publicity Officer for the first Open Day, but felt I was more suited to the practical side of setting up the exhibits. I had an immense amount of fun at this time keepng people awake all night while shunting the yard and the exhibits.

For those of you who have been to Bescot you will realise that the site is very long and a requirement was to provide a "wall" of wagons stretching from the South end of the yard complex all the way along the Up Goods Line to the station - a distance of nearly a mile. The idea was to draw out rafts of wagons road by road, and push them up the Goods Line. When the yard was clear of wagons the exhibits could be layed out for display.

37298 admirably performed this task on the first Open Day, with a member of class 27, then class 26 on the subsequent years.

One of the attractions for the first open day was to exhibit a class 02. Messrs Lunt, Comley and Pitt of Pensnett industrial estate kindly agreed to the loan of 02003 provided we place their logo on one cabside, with 02003 and BR arrow on the other.

I organised several working parties to Pensnett to clean and paint "Peter" and colleagues robbed parts from "Sam" to provide a complete working loco.

The lads who were involved in this project were John and Bob Kendrick, Martin Davies, Steve Howard, Dave Burley, Robin Coles and myself

I hope to include a few images of this short period of time.

At the last open day a group of lads headed (I believe) by Bob Kendrick painted 20160 into a unique colour scheme to be known as "BoBo" for charity fundraising. I don't have a photo myself but this link will take you to Paul Bettany's view of this loco on the Down Local being painted for the event - http://locostabling.fotopic.net/p9556202.html

<img src="http://thumbs.fotopic.net/627014000312.jpg" width="120" height="87" alt="Myself (L) and Ken Broome are photgraphed holding the commemorative brass Sister Dora plaque which was cast by Tony Bill for 31430.
Aviation - In flight refuelling

I was very privileged to take a place on two flights arranged by friends and colleagues, with the RAF. This was in the days when flying was considered a great deal safer than it is now, indeed I doubt that what we did then would be allowed now.

The first squadron to host us was 101 Squadron at Brize Norton who had already developed links with railwaymen and women. We were taken up from Brize in RAF K3 tanker ZA147 "F". In civil terms this was a Vickers VC10 built as an airliner, but converted into an air refuelling tanker utilising the hose and drogue system.

We flew in "racetrack" patterns over the North Sea while a number of fast jets came to take fuel from us.

Not to be outdone by 101 squadron, the "Wide" boys of 216 Squadron who operate Lockheed TriStar tanker/transports agreed to host us. We were shown around one of the ex British Airways TriStars, but unfortunately, the aircraft was not considered servicable enough to fly non-military personnel. The option excercised was to allow 10 squadron to host us in transport VC10 XV107.

This mission involved meeting three other aircraft over the North Sea so that an RAF Hercules could photograph a three ship formation of 216 Squadron TriStar, 10 Squadron VC10 and 101 Squadron VC10.

Ironically, the VC10 which flew with us on the second trip was ZA147 on which our first trip was undertaken.

I had a fantastic time and extend my thanks to all who helped arrange these two trips, particularly Paul Dalton, Terry Farren and Dave Mutty

We arrived at Santa Domingo to discover a boneyard of piston-engined transports aircraft. Due to heat haze and tinted windows it was difficult to photograph the planes there but there were three connies, three C46s, countless DC3/4/6/7, a Martin 4-0-4 and others. The highlight if my holiday was to see connie HI 583 CT take off on a freight run - truly a graceful aircraft !!" />

Irish Railways

I've only ever crossed the Irish Sea three times, only once to the Republic, but I certainly enjoyed by brief day trips.

The first trip was as a result of "overdossing" on the Glasgow-Stranraer overnight, where I ended up on a dead end move at the Scottish port. I decided to take the ferry to Larne, and filled in with a class 70 unit Larne Harbour-Larne Town, then walking back to the port !!!!

The second trip took me to Belfast for a slightly more extensive bash of the DEMUs of NIR.

The final trip (maybe not so final) was an ITG railtour. Travelled with John Duff on the overnight Crewe-Holyhead, then ferry to Dun Loaghaire, for the DART to Dublin Connolly.

I took these pictures while waiting for the railtour which was a pair of class 121s from Dublin to Limerick Jn for 001 (herself) via Ennis and Athenry back to Dublin, extended through to Dun Loaghaire due to late running.

I wish I'd done more over there with the baby GMs but it is sadly too late now.

German narrow gauge railways

As mentioned in another collection, my first trip to Germany was partly to visit the metre-gauge Harz system. This system was such an experience to me.

Huge 2-10-2s storming up 1 in 30 gradients with steam everywhere and shrieking whistles - fantastic !!!!

I've not been back to the Harz system since 1988 so I cannot comment on how the system is today, but if it is anything like the system I remember, I stongly urge anyone to go for a visit.

German Railways were of considerable interest to me, particularly the "forbidden" East Germany. Apart from travelling via the DB to Austria in 1981 and 1982 my first real trip to Germany was in 1983 to try and scoop a couple of the legendary V200s before their withdrawal. This trip also included the first trip to the Harz system which was repeated in 1985 and 1988. I havn't been back to the Harz since German reunification.

People

In the course of my interests and employment in the railway industry (and transport in general) I have made a number of friends and met the odd character.

Because I moved away from home at the age of 18 to further my career (not much promotion in Mid Wales !!!) Bescot became a "second home" to me for 21 years. Many of the railway folk at Bescot were friendly and helpful and I enjoyed many "extra-curricular" experiences. One of those highlights was a trip to the Southampton area on a pair of class 20s.

I wouldn't compromise any individual's identity here but thanks to all those who gave me so much pleasure in the 1980s - a golden decade for me.

Austrian narrow gauge railways

What started me off on Austrian Railways were those wonderful 760mm gauge tank locos on the Steyrtalbahn. I was hooked on the narrow gauge lines from then on.

My first visit was in May 1981 to Garsten for the Steyrtalbahn, then moving on for a quick trip along part of the Pinzgaur Lokalbahn from Zell am See. At that time the stock was still green and some of the class 2095 diesels still carried the "flugelrad" cast emblems and numbers.

Having returned to Austria several times since I find that the Federal Railway operations still appeal more to me than the numerous private operators.

As can be seen in these photographs colour schemes come and go !!!

I've visited the USA a few times and have managed a few pics of trains over there. Not too struck on the modern behemoths - I prefer the older Geeps and SDs which are becoming increasingly rare.

One of my favourite destinations in the USA is the Gulf Coast of Florida. There is a railway operation based at Fort Myers named the Seminole Gulf Railroad, started out operating a handful of GP7s and GP9s.

For the unitiated, US rail operations are predominantly privately owned and are to a large part established as freight carriers. The few Amtrak trains which operate in the USA generally run on the freight railroads at 79mph, although the Northeast corridor in the New York, Philadelphia, Washington area allows 125mph electrified running.

A trip to Palm Springs in May 2005 provided some absolutely stunning displays of North American railroading. A pair of 4400hp locos flat out upgrade at around 15mph is breathtaking, as are consist of seven diesels on the front of a mile long doublestack container train !!

Palm Springs is referred to as an oasis in the desert where temperatures are quite often 100+ F during the day. Massive farms of wind turbines populate the landscape as you will see in some of these photos.

Czech Railways

My interest in Czech Railways was aroused by the sight of "strange beasties from over the border" into Gmund in Austria. The regular locomotive in steam days was 556.0506 a modern 2-10.0 tender loco which tripped freight and passenger services from the former Gmund Hbf (now Ceske Velenice) over to Gmund NO.

556.0506 was replaced by the CSD T669.1 series, generally T669.1078 which was renumbered 771.078. Other classes of loco over the years have been T466.0 (class 735), T478.1 and T478.4 (classes 751 and 754).

A figurative "stones throw" from Litschau, at the end of one of the northern 760mm gauge branches, is Nova Bystrice (Neubistritz). This is the end of a 760mm gauge branch from Jindrichuv Hradec (Neuhaus), fomerly a CSD operation, but now operated by JHMD.

For the record CSD (Czech & Slovak Railways) was split into CD and ZSR when the countries broke Czechoslovakia apart.

Most enthusiasts of railways will probably admit to a passing interest in the local buses. I have to admit an interest in the 1980s WMPTE scene, as well as the Crosville Bristols I grew up with in Wales in the early 1970s. I don't have any pics of the Crosville scene as I knew it, but here are a few WMPTE buses.

The Austrian Federal Railway system (OBB) has a particular attraction to me. In the 1980s the system presented a particularly professional operation, yet using some quite elderly equipment on it's secondary operations. The staff were very motivated and train movements were conducted with slickness and speed.

This collection depicts standard gauge OBB operations.
