Privileged to obtain a brakevan pass in order to "do" the Kingsbury branch, I turned up at Saltley to meet the T76 crew. The driver - Stan Massey insisted I ride on the footplate of his "choppers" because "it wasn't safe in the brakevan" !!! You can tell his style of driving from his right hand !!!

Hi Phil, This is one of the best pictures of a class 103 in traffic with BR I have been able to find on the internet. I wondered if you would be kind enough to let our group use it on a feature on our website as we have just purchased one of the last remaining Park Royal DMUs in exsistance. You would be credited to the photo and a link could be provided to your site. Our site can be viewed here: http://www.helstondieselgroup.co.uk Regards Nathan

A "JA" and a "KB" on BS shed !! The Southern Region was a master at using codes, the traction being no exception. The class 73s were known as JA for 73/0 and JB for 73/1. Similarly the 33 were KA, the Push-Pull variant being known as KB. This pairing of 33116 & 73002 brought the Severn Valley Express railtour up from Waterloo to Kidderminster for the SVR, then visited BS for servicing.

I used to think of sightings like this as "CITA" (Camel in the Arctic), applied to such events as when Western Ranger went all the way to Leeds or that Peak did the Waterloo-Exeter.

An interesting picture. One of my interests is the working of carriage stock. I have written an article with the aid of the 1986/87 LMR CWN on the train working. This train was an Oxley half set which was joined at Shrewsbury with the first class half set. I would be interested in using a copy of this in my article (which is in "Update" the society journal for DEMU so I don't get paid). I would of course credit you and let you have a copy of the article text. Thanks for your help. Nat

M28379 and M29133 are on adjacent platforms at Birkenhead North. I only travelled on this line once to "do" the Rock Ferry and Hooton branches. The 502s and 503s still dominated the scene then but I have to confess to being ignorant of which these are !!!

They're Class 503's. they've had a door cut into the front to allow emergency access on the single bore Liverpool loop line, and the 502's were never treated that way. 502's tended to operate North Liverpool services only, where as 503's could be found on the 'Northern' line, but operated all 'Wirral' line services.

40189 is held in Stoke station as I leave Stoke on a west country bound inter regional from Manchester. Stoke station had permissive working and a class 47 had crept up behind our train to drop onto the holding sidings.

I must take issue regarding the identity of this 40! Since the Weaver Junction derailment back in August 1975, 40189 did not return to traffic, nor did it have a domino headcode whilst it was in traffic.

A nice picture. Just how I remember Nuneaton during the 1980s. I still can't get used to the new platform 6 and 7 built on the site of where the loco is standing..I think this line is now the up and down Arley line ( for platform 6...)
